Mubi South is one of the 21 Local Government Areas of Adamawa State and has 11 wards. The major tribes in the area Gude, Njenyi, and Fali hold their market day on Wednesdays. They share boundaries with Mubi South LGA, which the jihadist group Boko Haram renamed Madinatul Islam in 2014 when they captured the town. The crises severely affected Mubi North and its people, causing many setbacks. As a result, CPSP was conducted in the area to improve security by establishing early warning and early response mechanisms
According to our findings, a total of 24 meetings were held, 32 community problems were identified, about 60 Advocacies were conducted, and 27 issues were solved by the CPSP platform over 24 months. The project would have impacted more and solved so many community problems. But the project suffered some financial challenges during its first implementation. More than 100,000 people benefited both directly and indirectly from the project.
The CPSP platform in Mubi North LGA successfully rehabilitated a mentally ill schoolgirl. Laria, abandoned as a baby and adopted by an old woman who found her by the roadside, grew up to become Head Girl in JSS 2 but later became mentally ill and began scavenging for food. After the old woman died, Laria’s relatives destroyed her home, exposing her to harsh weather. A CPSP member raised her case during a meeting, and Murmushi PDF stepped in to support her care and later transferred her to Yola for treatment. She is now recovering and has been adopted by the ED of Murmushi, who named her Laria Babagari Baraya.
Laria said, “I am grateful to the people of CPSP and Murmushi for coming to my aid. I have nothing to offer but to pray that God answers all their prayers, and I pray that God will give me the ability to go back to school.”
The CPSP platform identified and addressed open defecation in the community. The CPSP committee sensitized the community on the dangers of open defecation, which can lead to diseases like cholera and other infections. They also visited NGOs to seek support for constructing toilets. One NGO responded and promised to build three toilets in the community, allocating a piece of land at the primary health care center for construction.
The people of Dazal struggled to move their sick ones to the clinic due to bad roads and the absence of a local clinic. With CPSP’s help, they organized and submitted a complaint to the Local Government and met with NGOs. An NGO named JIZ intervened, and a community member donated a plot of land for constructing the clinic.
There was a clash of interests between two tri-cycle unions leading to a serious beef between their members and threatening the peace and safety of the people in Mubi South. The CPSP platform intervened through mediation with the help of the Emir of Mubi and they were able to reconcile the two unions which are now working together as a team.
The CPSP platform successfully addressed improper waste disposal, especially along drainages. A CPSP committee educated residents on the dangers of improper waste disposal. After the sensitization, community members, mainly youths, organized a cleanup of the drainages and warned others to stop dumping refuse.
Adamu said, “Mubi is experiencing an influx of people, especially youths seeking greener pastures. Criminal activities involving tricycles have been reported. With CPSP’s help, our association liaised with relevant stakeholders and security outfits to address the menace. Riders are now sensitized to report suspicious activity. We imposed sanctions on using extra persons as drivers, rallied the Association of Tricycle Riders, and banned tricycle use during late hours.”
Religious leaders actively tackled gender-based violence. They implemented strategies in worship centers to sensitize members on the negative effects of gender-based violence, rape, and other sexual crimes. Community members were encouraged to report or provide information on any suspected occurrence or attempt.
In Mubi South LGA, CPSP identified drug abuse among youths as a major challenge. They reported drug hotspots to the Emir of Mubi, who involved security agencies. A joint task force arrested 15 dealers at six locations. CPSP also partnered with ward and religious leaders to raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse.
To intervene in the activities of the “Shila boys,” CPSP members met with the DPO to identify locations controlled by the boys. They dispersed them and monitored their activities to prevent re-convergence. Wuro Patuji is mostly where the boys operate, along Polytechnic and Lokawa roads, and running wards GSS back to their area. CPSP’s work plans, along with security agents and local vigilante groups creating checkpoints at night, restored peace and order. This partnership significantly reduced crime in these communities.
CPSP identified a group of Baban Bola boys who steal car parts and iron. When cars broke down on the road, the mostly underage Baban Bola boys stole anything they could before the owner arrived with a mechanic, which also prevented them from attending school. CPSP met with the Baban Bola chairman, requested that they stop buying from underage children, and encouraged the children to return to school. This plan has helped many out-of-school children go back to school.
