The Bead Making Training for Widows and Girls project was implemented by Murmushi Peoples Development Foundation (MPDF) to address the critical economic challenges faced by widows and vulnerable girls in Mubi North and Mubi South LGAs of Adamawa State. Many of these women lost their spouses as a result of the Boko Haram insurgency, leaving them without a stable source of livelihood. This situation exposed them to social vices such as prostitution, drug peddling, and extreme poverty, which heightened their vulnerability and dependence on others for survival.
To mitigate these challenges, MPDF provided hands-on training in bead making to 12 widows and girls, equipping them with practical skills to produce items such as beaded bags, purses, jewellery, and other accessories. The training aimed to create sustainable income-generating opportunities, reduce economic vulnerability, and promote self-reliance among the participants.
The bead-making training significantly transformed the lives of the participants. The 12 widows and girls who successfully completed the training are now economically empowered and self-reliant. They have established small-scale businesses where they produce and sell bead-related products such as handbags, purses, and necklaces. This has enabled them to generate consistent income to feed their families, pay school fees for their children, and improve their overall living conditions.
Some participants have even expanded their businesses by training other women within their communities, thereby creating a ripple effect of empowerment. The project not only reduced their financial dependency but also restored their dignity and hope for a better future.
