Michika is one of the 21 Local Government Areas of Adamawa State, comprising 16 wards and 9 districts. Margi, Higgi, Hausa, and Fulfulde are the major languages spoken in the LGA, and its market days fall on Saturdays and Sundays. The LGA was attacked by Boko Haram, forcing many residents to flee their homes and communities in search of safety. The crises left Michika and its people facing numerous setbacks, making it one of the LGAs where CPSP was conducted to improve community security through the establishment of early warning and early response mechanisms.
According to our findings, a tot1al of 24 meetings were held, 27 community issues were identified, 53 advocacies were conducted, and the CPSP Michika platform solved 19 issues over a total period of 24 months. The project would have impacted more and solved so many community problems. But the project suffered some financial challenges during its first implementation. More than 15,000 people benefited both directly and indirectly from the project.
Clearing congestion around the bus stop junction caused by Keke riders, women selling on the roadside, and other traders reduced after the CPSP sensitized the community. This has allowed total free movement and accident-free areas. The CPSP achieved this by educating the riders and women on the dangers of creating congestion and selling on roads.
Thanks to the CPSP, the community now handles issues without going to the police. The platform has fostered a sense of acceptability in dialogue, creating lasting peace within the communities.
The CPSP platform identified and solved the farmer/herder conflict. They held a series of dialogues between the two parties and identified causes such as cattle routes, tribalism, insufficient grazing space, and intolerance. Among these, they prioritized addressing cattle route issues, a major source of conflict. Together with the Emir of Michika, Sarki Shanu, a representative of Miyyetti Allah, and some Local Government representatives, they mapped the cattle routes and warned farmers not to farm on certain areas
The CPSP brought prevailing issues to light and sought practical solutions. They facilitated a meeting with the chairman of the traders’ union (GAMZAKI) regarding overdue payments for market guardsmen, which had been pending for 7 months. Now, the guards are being paid and working without any issues
To reduce marriage complications, the CPSP platform educated the CAN and Muslim Council to encourage their members to undergo pre-marital tests. One of the Matan Zumunta testified, “The pre-testing before marriage has greatly impacted us, and now we see the need and are adopting the process in all aspects.”
The Michika CPSP platform addressed the problem of dumping refuse in constructed drainages in Sabun Pegi. They sensitized community members about the dangers of such behavior and its impact on the community. Initially, people thought the government alone was responsible for cleaning, but they learned it is also their responsibility. They organized and conducted community sanitation, cleaning the drainages and repairing roads damaged by rainwater.
