Murmushi People’s Development Foundation led the Case Area Targeted Intervention (CATI) in Yola North. This report presents the program’s goals, strategies, achievements, and lessons from the cholera response.
From August to October 2024, the MPDF CATI team conducted operations in Alkalawa, Gwadabawa, and Limawa wards. After Rapid Diagnostic Tests confirmed cholera cases, MPDF joined forces with the Ministry of Water Resources, the WASH sector, RUWASSA, and UNICEF to launch a full-scale intervention in September.
The Cholera Treatment Center recorded about 1,000 cases. The medical team treated almost all patients, who later recovered, while 12 people died six in the facility and six at home. The CATI team disinfected areas within a 50-meter radius of each affected home, distributed cholera kits, and led hygiene campaigns. MPDF also collected 60 cartons of hygiene kits in three batches from RUWASSA through Mr. Solomon Tashara of Sorasun Foundation (SRF).
The CATI team disinfected 60 identified households using a chlorine-based solution made from 70% High-Test Hypochlorite (HTH). They diluted the solution to suitable concentrations for each purpose 0.05% for handwashing, 0.2% for cleaning compounds and utensils, and 2% for toilets and drainages to ensure proper sanitation and infection control.
Water Chlorination Activities
MPDF worked closely with ECI & SRF together with the communities to ensure availability of clean water sources through the installation and maintenance of wells and water purification systems.
Distribution of Cholera Response Kits and Aqua Tabs
To strengthen household-level prevention and resilience, MPDF distributed cholera prevention kits and a large supply of aqua tabs to community members across Yola North. These items aimed to promote safe water use and reduce the risk of waterborne diseases.
