Through its livelihood and skills development initiatives, Murmushi People’s Development Foundation (MPDF) is empowering vulnerable groups across Adamawa State. From film production training for enthusiastic youths in Yola South and Girei, to bead-making programs for widows in Mubi, and computer literacy training for unemployed young people, MPDF is helping individuals rebuild their lives, gain self-reliance, and contribute productively to their communities
Before the intervention, many youths received training in trades that did not match their interests. This has led them to sell their startup kits, remain idle, or engage in delinquent activities. To address this, MPDF introduced film training, a field highly popular among young people. Fifty youths from IDP and host communities in Yola South and Girei LGAs received hands-on training in camera operation, sound, editing, lighting, and directing. The participants showed great enthusiasm, often attending both morning and afternoon sessions. Despite incomplete funding from the British Council, 37 trainees have already started using their skills commercially, particularly in video production.
Before this intervention, many widows mostly victims of Boko Haram attacks in Mubi North and Mubi South LGAs had no means of livelihood. This hardship made them vulnerable to prostitution, drug peddling, and other vices. In response, MPDF trained 12 widows in bead making to help them rebuild their lives. These women now earn a living independently, producing bags, purses, and other bead-based items to support, feed, and educate their children.
In Mubi North and Mubi South LGAs, unemployed youths often turned to idleness, phone snatching, drug peddling, and other social vices. To curb these issues, MPDF trained 25 young men and women in basic computer skills. After completing the program, participants received certificates and began applying their knowledge productively. Some have secured small loans to establish business centers and are now self-employed, creating jobs for others. This training has promoted self-reliance and improved computer literacy, giving many youths a renewed sense of purpose and direction.
